Apple Is Blocking Facebook and Google Tracking

Here’s a reason to use a browser other than Google’s Chrome. Companies, such as Facebook and Google track user online web browsing sessions in order to tailor ads to what users are searching. These sessions track users with “cookies”. Cookies are a small piece of data sent from a website, and stored on the user’s computer.

On September 18th, the Apple web browser Safari was updated to block some of Facebook cookies that are used to track users as they surf the web. Additionally, Firefox is in the process of making similar updates to be released later this year.

Many websites have LIKE and SHARE buttons on their websites. These buttons contain cookies that allow Facebook to keep tabs on users. Facebook is able to keep tabs on you, even when you are logged out of Facebook, when visiting these websites. The Safari update will potentially block this type of tracking of users.

For businesses that use Facebook remarketing ads, your ads may be blocked by the Safari browser. Watch your ads carefully, as you may experience a downturn in your Facebook advertising efforts.

If you’re one of those people … like Wendy – who is so tired of “pink Ugg” ads showing on her browser … you may be able to rejoice, as you’ll be viewing fewer remarketing ads – based on your internet searching.
