Search Engine Optimization is an important part of your online marketing strategy. After all, why build a website if you don’t expect anyone to see it? There are a few things you can do as you maintain and manage your website to help improve the overall ranking of your site.
Including a keyword phrase in your domain name is helpful. However, if you’ve used your domain name for years, you can include your keyword phrases in the file name of the pages you create for your website. For example: /internetmarketingservices.asp
Each page has a title tag. This is one of the most important variables that Google considers when trying to determine what your page is about. Don’t use “home” or “about” as your title tag. Instead pick two keyword phrases that describe the content to be found on the page.
Similar to the title tag, each page also has a description tag. Often times Google will display the description tag in the search results page. Write the description for the searcher … and also use the keyword phrases you used in your title tag.
Header tags are a way to create headers – in an outline fashion on your website. These tags (H1 – H6) tell Google what is most important to least important content on the webpage. Always use at least three levels to break up your content (H1 – H3). Remember to use your keyword phrases in your header tags.
Image alt tags are a sentence you write to describe the image. Always use your keyword phrases in your alt tags. BONUS … rename your image file name to also include your keyword phase for the page on which the image resides.
Needless to say there are over 200 variables of things you can do to improve the overall optimization of your website. However, by creating the above habits each time you edit or update a page of your website, you’ll be able to increase your website rankings.
