How to Stay On Top of Your Game as an Industry Expert

Wendy and I truly LOVE our weekly networking group – N3 – No Nonsense Networking!  One of the things that make N3 so different, as compared to your more traditional weekly networking meetings, is our Professional Development Discussion.  Each week a member poses a question for discussion to the group, and we spend a good twenty minutes sharing our expertise and experience with one another.  It is by far everyone’s favorite part of the meeting.

Recently, the following question was posed … and it generated a ton of inspiration, endorsement and ideas for each of us to try not only in our own businesses, but also as we each continue to grow in our personal development as well.

What is it that you do to not only fortify yourself to stay on top of your game, but also how to continue to grow as an expert in your industry?

Here is a brief list of the information shared by everyone in our networking group:

• Continuous education for additional training and certification – Strive to be a life-long learner.
• Look to influencers and experts within your industry – watch Ted Talks, and other resources provided for motivation and inspiration from leaders in your industry.
• Learn at least one new thing each day.  Read for an hour each day.
• Be aware of your competitors … don’t obsess, but be aware of what others try in your industry.  Same can be said for your colleagues.
• Multi-task … listen to pod-casts while you work out.  Amazon Audible – for about $15/month, you can read/listen to one book a month.
• Attend tradeshows – be aware and up to date about what’s changing in your industry.
• Find and attend industry workshops and classes.
• Blog more … by teaching and sharing and educating, you are implicitly defining yourself as the expert that you are.
• Do warm ups – to be the best at every task, all day long – warm up first.
• Schedule time each week to “work on you”.
• Be more aware of your surroundings … and ask more questions.

After reading that amazing list … we’re sure you can agree why Wendy and I love the Professional Development Discussion part of our weekly meeting.  You can’t help each week, to walk away armed with new information and inspiration to carry you through to the next week’s meeting!
