Everyone knows by now that they’re supposed to be blogging! Blogs help you communicate with your customers, provide you with feedback, increase your brand’s exposure, and most importantly, support your social media efforts. So for the purposes of this blog post, we’re going to assume that you have a blog … and you’re using it!
One of the things that Wendy and I find really frustrating about website content in general is how hard it is to understand. More often than not, the words on the webpage assume I know what someone is talking (writing) about. This problem also applies to your blog posts. Do I have to be an industry expert in your field to understand what you’re communicating to me? If so … it’s time to start editing your blogs differently, so that more visitors and readers can understand what’s being said.
One great way to determine the readability of your blog is to run it through the Readability Test Tool. Using the Flesch Kincaid Reading scale, the results help you understand the reading level of your content. To give you some perspective, Readers Digest generally scores around a 65, while Harvard Law Review scores in the 30s.
For example, Wendy and I ran our website home page through the tool. Our reading level score was 69.1 (on the 1 – 100 scale, higher is better!) Our page was assessed to be written at grade level seven, and could easily be understood by 12 or 13 year olds. This is good news, since we guide our clients to write their content to be understood by teenagers!
We also ran one of our blog posts from last week through the tool. Not quite as good as our home page … but still in the ball park!
