Today we continue with Part II of A Bit About Keywords. Here are a couple more things to keep in mind when selecting keyword phrases for your website.

Use longer keyword phrases.  It’s ok to find keyword phrases that are four, five or six words long.

Single keywords are not only extremely popular, but are also the vaguest.  Longer keyword phrases are much more specific.  Using specific keyword phrases is like prequalifying your website visitors.  Today’s search engine users are very savvy and do type in long phrases when searching for information.  By using specific, long keyword phrases you essentially are filtering out all of the website traffic you don’t want, which allows you to concentrate on being found by your target niche.

Think about using the singular form of your keyword phrase instead of the plural form.

Often times website searchers are looking for just “one” of what you sell.  But you may be thinking in terms of selling more.  For example, you sell widgets – so you’re inclined to use the search term “red widgets”.  However, your buyers may only need one red widget.  You’ll get better results if you use the keyword phrase “red widget”.  Typically, pluralized keyword phrases get as much as 90% less searches as do their singular counterparts.

If your goal is for more of your niche market to find your website on the search engines, the best place to being is with a bit of keyword research.  To get started, choose one page of your website and research the best keyword phrase for that page.  Over the weeks, we’ll continue to write blogs about what to do with your keyword phrases next!
