If you’ve taken one of Wendy's webinars, or read some of our blog posts, then you know how very important keyword phrases are regarding your website. A keyword, or keyword phrase, are the words that visitors to your website, might use to find your website. The corollary is Search Engines use those same keyword phrases to determine which websites will rank high on the search engine results pages.
Although it may sound reasonably straight forward, there are a few things to keep in mind when selecting keyword phrases for your website.
Years ago Wendy and I met with a local chiropractor about Search Engine Optimization. He was so thrilled that his website was found for the keyword phrase "chiropractic care". We suggested that he would actually get much better results if he used the phrase "chiropractor". When we did our research we discovered that absolutely no one was searching on the phrase "chiropractic care". In other words, what good is it to be first on a search results page, if no one ever searches on that term?
Keep in mind that single keywords and popular keyword phrases will always have millions of other websites also trying to be ranked on the first page of Google or Bing. If you are going to compete for ranking with a popular keyword phrase, ask yourself first?
If the answers to the above questions don't reflect your website as ready to compete, start small instead. Search for keyword phrases that have less competition. Use a few different words on different web pages to expand your overall reach.
